This month BBC One soap EastEnders celebrates its 25th anniversary and to celebrate this landmark we take a look at one of the soaps creators, Julia Smith. Together with Tony Holland she created EastEnders and later Eldorado, which despite being remembered these days for all its flaws wasn’t a bad soap at all just beset with problems that tainted its first few months. However, these two soaps aren’t Smith’s only contribution to the world of television having worked on shows such as Doctor Who and Angels. So in this Icon piece we look at her career from directing to producing and creating.

Reg Watson - ATV NetworkReg Watson, the man who helped establish ATV Network’s ATV Midlands in 1956 and went on to create Britain’s first “true” soap opera, Crossroads, has been honoured with Australia’s equivalent of the MBE. Reg worked in the UK between 1955 and 1973 before returning to his native Australia where he continued to devise and produce popular serials including The Young Doctors and Neighbours.

Last week it was announced that Lucy Allan was quitting her role of producer on Hollyoaks to be replaced by Paul Marquess. It’s not the first time the incoming producer has worked on a Channel Four having previously produced Brookside but it’s his tenure at The Bill he’ll be back remembered for as he blew up the Sun Hill police station, killed off countless characters, introduced many an ex-soap star and sexed up the police drama in an attempt to boost ratings.
