Christopher Meloni has reportedly quit his role of Detective Elliot Stabler on the NBC drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Meloni has starred in the Law & Order spin-off since its launch in 1999 but has decided after 12 years to move onto other projects – it’s not known how his character will exit the series other than it’s reported to be later this year. "I think 12 years is enough, a good number. The writers will have fertile ground to figure out how to arc [Stabler] out to another place - whether it's this world or the next." – Christopher Meloni quoted in the Courier Mail. Actress Mariska Hartigay who plays Olivia Benson in the series has stated she’ll remain on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit despite the departure of her co-star.
