Nearly 8000 people have complained over the possible closure of digital radio station BBC 6 Music, the corporation has revealed. The station has BBC 6 Musicbeen marked for closure along with BBC Asian Network as part of the BBC’s plans to cut back on services and redirect money to elsewhere in the corporation; such as BBC Two, CBBC and more investment in drama and comedy. Although the closure of 6 Music is only part of the proposals put forward by the BBC to save money it is by far the most controversial prompting a furious backlash from the public and those within the music industry. Amongst those high profile figures to oppose the closure are Richard Bacon, Jarvis Cocker and Adam Buxton while a campaign on Facebook and Twitter have also been launched. A campaign to save the BBC Asian Network is also underway with over 100 high profile British Asians signing a letter of support for the station.

The proposals for the closures and cut backs have now been put forward to the BBC Trust who have begun a public consultation on them. The trust has already stated that if there is wide spread opposition to the proposals from the public then certain elements will be changed.

I understand that the 8,000 complaints do not include the messages sent to the BBC Trust's Strategic review consultation or emails sent to BBC Directors directly.

It might be an idea, rather than just copy and pasting press releases, to do some journalism with it and find out the current number of comments sent to the commission.

Otherwise you are just reporting spin by the BBC.
  • Pot, kettle black
They have already covered this issue in extensive coverage. Their link to the facebook groip was most useful and they covered that twice. They have also covered the Twitter campaign and the campaign top save the Asian Netowrk.

So maybe you should do youe research. This is clearly just a follow up report.
  • ATV
We have many articles on this issue ranging from the Facebook and Twitter campaigns to save the station to comments by Ed Vaziey and his turnaround in support of the station. We also covered the campaign to save the Asian Network too. This is just a quick update designed to keep people updated about the anger out there over the clossure. We ourselves have posted two 'Bog's on the closures too. I kindly suggest you search the site and see all our coverage on this.
  • UP the SIX
Might be wise for the 'DS age' thick types to add links to earlier stories as ATV sometimes does 'as we reported earlier' with the earlier bit a link to the earlier article.

Isn't that just what Digital Spy do? Copy and paste is the DS way.
  • UP the SIX
DS is good for the forums, the main site is twaddle. Shame if the BBC Online sites have to close and leave us with that.

As for Six Music, its doing what RADIO ONE should be doing. So it should go, and most of its schedule placed on RADIO ONE.

The days of 'educated and entertain' as a PSB are over. That was the thing when we only had the BBC, but we have commerical radio/tv to entertain us now. The BBC if they want to do commerical stuff should do an RTE and pay for those shows via adverts.

I must say that I did find the article an interesting and informative little update, letting us know where things currently stood on the closure.
