CBS is lining up a new chat-show hosted by Sara Gilbert to replace cancelled soap As The World Turns when it finishes in the Autumn. CBS axed the show following low ratings; a similar fate that befell Guiding Light which bowed out last year on CBS after 72 years on air. What will replace As The World Turns has been much speculated but now CBS has revealed that a new daily talk show by Sara Gilbert will be it. The show will feature a panel of guests such as Julie Chen and Sharon Osbourne discussing topical events - similar in premise perhaps to the UK show Loose Women.

As The World Turns has been on air since 1956 and is currently the longest running soap in the world following the demise of Guiding Light. It was created by Irna Phillip who also created fellow soaps Guiding Light, Days of our Lives, Another World and Our Private World - a spin-off from As The World Turns which ran for a few months in 1966.

Luke Synder and Noah MayerAs The World Turns has clocked up over 13,000 episodes in its time on air but recent years have seen ratings tumble down. It is currently the lowest rated daytime soap alongside ABC series One Life to Live. Despite its low ratings the series still has a loyal, if small, following and one of the most popular storylines of recent years has been the gay romance between Luke Synder (Van Hansis) and Noah Mayer (Jake Silbermann) - affectionately dubbed ‘Nuke’ by some. Fans of the super-couple are hoping that the finale of As The World Turns will include a sunset ending for their favourite gay couple.

Yep, Luke and Noah area super-couple, and even if it's happening far later than it should, they'll have the happy ending they so deserve. I'm sure of that

    Agreeeeed! LOVE NUKE!
  • Candace  - Luke!
As a 25 year fan, I want a happy ending for LUKE.
That certainly does not include reuniting him with Noah. Luke and Reid are the last love story ATWT will ever do and its the one drawing all the buzz despite getting one day a week.
  • Nukefan
So much buzz that Luke/Reid are the couple mentioned in the article here. Except not. LOL. No, Luke and Reid aren't generating nearly the buzz Nuke did, and still do three years later. Then there's the two fan events in Paris (another coming up in Boston this Aug, btw) to appreciate and say goodbye to Luke/Noah and Van and Jake. Yeah, don't really foresee anything like that happening for L/R. Something else Luke & Reid aren't getting is viewers. Luke/Reid days have consistently been the lowest rated eps every week. Not pulling that out of thin air; check the ratings. L/R tanked. Oh, and I love that Van is on record yet again as wanting Nuke to be endgame. He gets it

As a once fan of Nuke and forever fan of Van Hansis/Luke, I hope he has a happy ending. I just hope it's with the hotter than blazes Reid!
  • atwt nuke fan  - Luke/Reid are NOT and NEVER WILL BE be a "super c
Luke and Reid barely even qualify as a couple...they can't even make up their minds if they are actually in a relationship. And so far, their time together has consisted of a few awkward kisses and insults hurled at each other.
Luke and Noah are a perfect example of an epic love story. They have had their share of problems, but they have NEVER stopped loving each other. Some people should go back and watch old episodes to be reminded of that. I suppose this comment section will be mucked up with more arguements like every other message board in the fandom. Most people know what Reid's fate is. Face it.

This. Whatever is going on between Luke and Reid it isn't a romance, and it certainly isn't about love. It's clear that Luke and Noah still love each other, and Reke fans are more desperate than ever to rewrite and dismiss their 3 year history. Like the guys said in Paris, Reid is ultimately just an obstacle.

Will it be a truly satisfying ending for either fandom? Not really, but at least Nuke will have the prospect of a future together.

The show has been cancelled. Daily ratings in light of that not only are not reliable but they simply do not matter. Noah is so important to the show that he does not have a role in his own story. Its not Luke and Reid fans complaining that they are not getting any press and pointing to a mention in an article from the UK as a success of some sort. And for all the fan events and buzz that were mentioned- TPTB at the show still had no respect for Nuke or its fans and no love for Jake. For years. Here is another thing.. Jon Hensley wanted Holden away from Lily for years. You can see how much weight an actors opinion carries- but if it makes you feel better, by all means. Will this show suddenly do right by Nuke at the end? Why would they start now?
  • Nukefan
The ratings do tell the story: evidently not too many viewers find a cruel, emotionally stunted, unethical middle-aged physician hurling insults at a much younger and vulnerable young man all that hot. Go figure.

Oh, and why am I not surprised a Reke fan would take a shot at Jake? No Nuke fan here said anything about ESS, "but if it makes you feel better, by all means".
  • Anju  - Luke
Noone's denying that Nuke was good. But that's the past. LuRe is the present. Who knows what ATWT will decide for the future? Stop pitting fandoms against each other. The show is cancelled. Get over yourself people and enjoy what's left of a show that people supposedly say they love.
  • Sharon  - Crazy4Jake
I have been watching ATWT for many years and I think that Luke and Noah are a supercouple. They deserve to be together in the end. Like Noah told Luke "you are my happy ending" and happy ending they should get. NUKEFOREVER
  • Cameron  - Love Nuke-Noah and Luke
Without a doubt one of the best couples ever in soapland. Well portrayed and I though well written in most cases. Jake Silbermann and Van Hansis who portray Noah and Luke respectively deserve honorary Emmys if not the real ones for giving live to this beautiful love story. They deserve to have a happy Endgame.
  • J  - NUKE forever!
NUKE was the best thing about ATWT! Not sure how ratings were measured but NUKE brought new & younger fans via YouTube worldwide. Perhaps showcasing primetime specials, cable soaptv, or webseries spin offs would've captured larger audiences. Bolder & more creative writing was needed to fit today's audience too. Jake is a heartthrob and complimented Van. Van is a true gem and deserves more than an endangered species soap role. NUKE forever!!!
