"It's one of those things that needs to feel organic and seamless," . "I don't want it to be a character that comes in and is a one off. I want someone to come in and have a reason and a purpose and really push that story forward the way I want to do it, and they're so important to the story that without them the show won't happen. That's what I want." - Producer Kevin Williamson at The CW's party for the Television Critics Association press tour.
Kevin Williamson has previous history with introducing gay characters from his time on Dawson’s Creek but the producer is keen not to repeat any of the clichés involved with a gay character and not do a “coming out” storyline.
"I don't want to do a coming out story. I did it on Dawson's Creek. As much as I'd like to do [a gay story], I want it to be fresh and I'd want to do it in a new way. I don't know what that way is. We've seen it. We've seen it on countless shows. I've done my coming out story and I was very proud of it and I don't know what it would be." - Producer Kevin Williamson
The producer and his team are now working on introducing a gay character onto The Vampire Diaries but it could be sometime before they arrive on-screen - if at all. The producers are keen to ensure the character fits in within the story and series and isn’t just a token gay.
The Vampire Diaries returns to The CW on September 9th. In the UK the series airs on ITV2. |

The Vampire Diaries will be introducing a gay character at some point as producer Kevin Williamson has announced he is keen to add such a character to the show but wants to do it in a unique and interesting way. The Vampire Diaries has proved to be a bit hit with audiences for The CW being one of its highest rated shows - doubtless benefiting from the popularity of the Twilight series. The series, based on the novels by L. J Smith, stars Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley and primarily resolves around a love triangle - with vampires, of course! As yet the drama doesn’t have a gay character - unlike fellow vampire series True Blood on HBO - but that is something the producers are keen to address.
