This month our Flashback strand takes a look at the LWT drama series Upstairs, Downstairs; hugely popular both here in the UK and in America the period drama has left a lasting legacy with many costume shows hoping to capture the success enjoyed by Upstairs, Downstairs. The drama ran for five seasons between 1971 and 1975 and when producers decided to end the series LWT reportedly were begging for Upstairs, Downstairs to continue - but the producers knew best and it ended on a high. Next year will see the return of the drama after 35 years off-air as the BBC revives it with Jean Marsh reprising her role of Rose Buck. So with that in mind we take a look back at the original and classic series of Upstairs, Downstairs.

Flashback: Howards’ Way

Our first piece on the BBC drama only covered its first season in 1985 so we’ve decided to revisit the folks of Tarrant and examine the series in whole. Flashback: Queer as Folk

This month our Flashback strand takes a look at the American version of Queer as Folk. While originally closely resembling the British series created by Russell T. Davies for Channel Four the remake quickly developed its own identity - spinning off into a very different direction from its British counterpart as it explored a wide variety of issues. While often dismissed by fans of the British series for being “soapy” and “glamorous” rather than gritty the American series covered issues such as HIV, Cancer, adoption, queer bashing and homophobia across its five year run. Here we remember Queer as Folk (USA) and celebrate its five year run.

Memorable Daytime Drama’s

 Following our very popular look at the history of breakfast programmes on ITV1 we’ve decided to continue our look at daytime television with a look at daytime drama’s. In recent years the BBC has expanded its daytime drama output considerably and successfully with war-time drama Land Girls, Police series Missing and Jimmy McGovern series Moving On all being re-commissioned by the corporation for second seasons. Daytime drama’s use to dominate the schedules, instead of cookery and antique programmes, so we take a trip down memory lane to cover some of the successful, and not successful, daytime drama’s of times gone by such as Crown Court and Marked Personal.

Flashback: The Gentle Touch

LWTThe 1980s LWT police drama series starring Jill Gascoine as a high ranking female police officer who has to balance her personal career and home life following the murder of her husband. The series, alongside BBC drama Juliet Bravo, was one of the first to centre of a female police detective – something later dramas such as Prime Suspect would do too much acclaim.

The BBC drama ran for three seasons in the 1990’s and starred Stella Gonet and Louise Lombard who decide to set up their own fashion house but find the competitive world of fashion has perils of its own.
