Can you believe its 25 years ago this month that Australian soap Neighbours made its premier and although not a hit to begin with very quickly, once it hit the UK, millions and millions of viewers tuned in every night for the latest antics of the residents of Ramsay Street. Obviously we were never going to let such an anniversary pass and so we’ve been on You Tube to find this week’s treat for you; the Neighbours opening titles from across the years!

This month Australian soap Neighbours celebrates its 25th anniversary and we just couldn’t let this milestone pass by without recognising it. Neighbours creator Reg Watson, who also created The Young Doctors, Prisoner Cell Block H and produced the early years of Crossroads, was made an ATV Icon in February and now another important figure in Neighbours history is given the same status – Helen Daniels. Helen Daniels was the original matriarch on the soap, crafted after Meg Mortimer of Crossroads, and for 12 years was a mother not only to her own family but her neighbours as well. Here we remember Helen’s time on Ramsay Street.

Now instantly Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan will spring to mind but they aren’t the only two who found greater success following life on Ramsay Street.

Reg Watson, the man who helped establish ATV Network’s ATV Midlands in 1956 and went on to create Britain’s first “true” soap opera, Crossroads, has been honoured with Australia’s equivalent of the MBE. Reg worked in the UK between 1955 and 1973 before returning to his native Australia where he continued to devise and produce popular serials including The Young Doctors and Neighbours.
