| Actor Cy Grant has died at the age of 90 |

Actor and activist Cy Grant has passed away at the age of 90 his wife has confirmed to the BBC. Grant was the first black person to be regularly seen on British television during an era when it was very uncommon for ethnic minorities actors to find regular work on television. Most shows during the era simply didn’t cast Black or Asian actors in major/important roles but Cy Grant was one of those who bucked the trend appearing in a wide range of programmes throughout his career.
Grant suffered in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War and was a fully qualified barrister but instead went into acting. For nearly three years he appeared in the BBC series The Tonight Show but left to avoid type casting. Roles followed in award winning dramas such as Home of the Brave and the ITV Play of the Week. He was one of the voices of the puppets in the Gerry Anderson series Captain Scarlet and made a memorable guest appearance in Blakes 7 in 1980 as a rebel who fled the federation after betraying his friends. Other drama’s that Grant appeared in included Softly Softly, The Persuaders and Metal Mickey.
Grant helped create the Drum Arts Centre in London and subsequently helped set up multi-cultural arts festivals across the country. Along with acting he was also a singer and recoded five albums; performing across the world. He also worked extensively in radio and wrote several books.
