Stargate actor Michael Shanks feels that the future of SG-1 isn’t a Syfy/MGMbright one. The actor played Daniel Jackson in the Sci Fi series and has also reprised his role for spin-offs Atlantis and Universe but feels he’s unlikely to reprise it again for the parent series. Stargate SG-1 ran for ten seasons; first off on Showtime and then later on the Sci Fi Channel. After the cancellation of SG-1 two straight-to-dvd movies were brought out and the original plan was for the series to continue in this form. However, while there are still plans for a third SG-1 film, and more Atlantis films, the economic down-turn has put the brakes on things.

"Given the amount of time lag that's gone on between us doing the movies, I suspect that we might be very far away from, if ever, doing another DVD movie. This might be the closing of the book on that particular [chapter of the] franchise. Never say never. It's always a possibility. But I think everybody's moving on to a certain point, and with the new show doing well, everybody's focusing their attention on that. The SG-1 idea is somewhat on the back burner, which is a little bit unfortunate, because I think one more story would have been a great way to bring Rick (Richard Dean Anderson) back in and really go there. But you know, business is business." – Michael Shanks talking to Sci Fi Wire.

SyFy/MGMThe latest entry in the Stargate franchise, following the cancellation of Atlantis, is Stargate Universe which has already been handed a second season order by the SyFy Channel following impressive ratings for the early episodes. Shanks is set to reprise his role of Daniel Jackson in future episodes of Universe and appeared in Friday evening’s two-hour Smallville episode, Absolute Justice. He’s also in talks to appear in the upcoming Hawaii Five-0 remake; earlier today it was announced that Lost star Daniel Dae Kim had been cast in the CBS pilot.

...is a bit misleading. He's voicing doubts over the likelihood of another SG-1 movie, not concerns over the future of the franchise as a whole.
