While Heroes once attracted high ratings for the broadcaster its most recent series struggled to pull in the viewers with less than 5 million viewers per episode on average. It is widely expected to be cancelled by the broadcaster by the return of Jay Leno to The Tonight Show, after his chat-show was cancelled, has left NBC with hours to fill in its schedule. Some speculate that this may be how Heroes gets back on the schedules for a fifth – and possible final – season. Bromstad wouldn’t be drawn on whether a fifth season would be its last merely stating “we’re going to cross that bridge when we come to it”. In the UK Heroes is shown on BBC Two but has dropped below 1 million viewers since it returned for its season four episodes. Under plans revealed by the corporation on Monday the BBC will spend less acquiring programmes from abroad and so Heroes could be dropped by the broadcaster has it has less money to spend on such programmes. If the BBC were to drop Heroes possible contenders to take over broadcasting include Sky One and Five.
